Chelsea are currently sweating over the fitness of Ben Chilwell after the defender was forced off with an injury during England’s Uefa Nations League match against Belgium.

Chilwell had to be substituted after just 38 minutes in the 2-0 loss to Belgium and left the pitch holding his lower back.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will be concerned Chilwell may not be fit to play Saturday clash with Newcastle when they return to Premier League action after the international break.

Chilwell has settled into the the blues side after his £45m transfer from Leicester City in the summer and sorted the left-back position problem at Chelsea.

At a time when Lampard seems to have found a settled defence and goalkeeper which includes Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy, losing the left-back would be a huge blow for the club.

Chilwell has been an important part of the Chelsea defence that kept five clean sheets in a row and went over 450 minutes without conceding a single goal before their 4-1 victory over Sheffield.

The defender, who was making his first England appearance in a year, had to be replaced by Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

It remains to be seen if he will be fit to play for Chelsea when they return to action after the break.
