According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea is in “pole position” to sign the United academy product if he doesn’t agree to new terms at Old Trafford.
Mainoo, who signed a new contract last year until June 2027, has been in talks for a deal that reflects his status as a first-team regular and England international.
United seems to be looking to reduce their wage bill, considering the potential departures of high earners like Casemiro, Antony, and Marcus Rashford.
Mainoo is reportedly concerned about the club’s direction and his prospects of playing Champions League football in the near future.
This news has certainly shocked many. On Tuesday evening, the Instagram account thesecretscout1 posted an edited picture of Mainoo in a Chelsea shirt with the caption: “News today of Chelsea leading the chase for Kobbie Mainoo if he leaves Man Utd. What do we think? Would this be a good move for him?”
Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer ‘liked’ the post and appears to have participated in a vote asking whether a move to Chelsea would be good for Mainoo, who has established himself as a first-team regular at United since his debut in 2023.
While it’s unclear how Palmer voted, his like suggests he might be open to having Mainoo at Chelsea. It has also been suggested that Mainoo has requested a significant pay increase to reject Chelsea and sign a new contract with United.
According to the Daily Mail, both Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, whose deal expires in 2028, could be sold as their sales would be considered “pure profit” on the balance sheets for profit and sustainability rules.
Mainoo is reportedly demanding wages of around £200,000 per week to sign a new contract with United.
