Investigators believe a tyre blowout during an overtaking maneuver caused the accident.
The brothers were driving back to the UK, planning to take a ferry from Santander after doctors advised Jota against flying due to recent lung surgery following his wedding in Porto just two weeks earlier.
That decision led them to travel along the A-52, a road known for its high accident rate, where the fatal crash occurred.
Now, further troubling details have emerged about the Lamborghini Huracán they were driving—a high-performance supercar that is no longer in production and has previously been subject to multiple safety recalls.

Reports suggest the model may have been the Huracán LP640-4 Performante, a track-focused version of the car known for its extreme speed and advanced aerodynamics. While celebrated for its performance, the model demands expert handling and has a history of safety concerns.
According to Carscoops and other sources, past recalls of the Huracán have included issues such as improperly installed crash protection brackets, faulty seatbelt warning systems, and headlight settings that could impair visibility.
In one instance, Lamborghini recalled 39 Huracán EVO Spyders in the U.S. due to a structural bracket being installed on the wrong side, potentially compromising crash safety.
Another recall affected over 7,800 units due to infotainment settings that allowed illegal headlight adjustments.
Some 2021 and 2023 models were also recalled over concerns that door safety clips were not properly secured, which could prevent doors from opening in an emergency.
While the exact variant of the Huracán involved in Jota’s crash has not been officially confirmed, the car’s history of recalls and the extreme conditions under which it operates have reignited discussions about the risks associated with high-powered supercars on public roads.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Lamborghini told The Sun: “We are saddened to learn of the accident that occurred in Spain involving a Lamborghini, in which Diogo and Andre Jota tragically lost their lives.
“In this moment of deep sorrow, we extend our heartfelt condolences to their family. Automobili Lamborghini awaits further information regarding the circumstances of the incident, in full respect for the people involved.”
Emotional tributes have continued to pour in from across the football world and beyond following the heartbreaking loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva.
Football legends like Steven Gerrard, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo have all paid their respects, while current teammates such as Andrew Robertson have honored Jota in deeply personal ways.
