Cunha, aged 26, sealed a £62.5 million transfer from Wolves to Old Trafford in June, followed by 25-year-old Mbeumo’s arrival from Brentford in a deal potentially worth £71 million later that July. ..Continue Reading
Both newcomers have been tasked with rejuvenating United after a disastrous 2024/25 season, which saw the club sink to a historic low of 15th in the Premier League and suffer a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
Teenage left-back Diego Leon, 18, also joined from Paraguay, while Marcus Rashford exited on a one-year loan to Barcelona that includes a £26 million purchase option next summer.
Veterans Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof were released at the end of June as part of a squad overhaul.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround the futures of sidelined stars Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia.
Yet, as per journalist Ben Jacobs, Cunha and Mbeumo are backing one particular player to be granted a fresh opportunity, feeling he may thrive under Amorim’s tactical vision.
Speaking on The United Stand, Jacobs said: “There’s a feeling from Cunha, Mbeumo, and other senior Man Utd players that Antony is a good fit in Amorim’s system.”
Antony, under contract with United until June 2027, spent the latter part of the 2024/25 season playing on loan for Real Betis, where he stood out by scoring nine times and assisting five goals across 26 matches.
Whether Antony plans to remain at Old Trafford is still unknown, especially with growing interest from Saudi Arabian teams, Betis again, and Bayer Leverkusen—currently led by Erik ten Hag.
In May, Antony opened up emotionally about a rough patch at United, admitting he had reached a breaking point and said he “couldn’t take it anymore.”
“Playing football was always something that I loved, and I went through difficult times when I didn’t feel that pleasure anymore,” Antony told TNT Sports Brazil.
“I would always talk to my brother, I used to say, ‘I can’t do it anymore, I can’t do it anymore’. He said: ‘Hold on a little longer and things will change’.
“I even get emotional because it was very difficult for me. Only I know what it was like inside the house, not even having the strength to even play with my son, having days without eating, staying in my room.
“It was very complicated, but with the help of my family with the help of God, I managed to turn things around. I’m already very happy here.”
