It was a forgettable outing for Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday as they suffered a surprising defeat to their long-time rivals. ..Continue Reading
New recruit Bryan Mbeumo struck early for Amorim’s team, scoring just two minutes into the match, before Cody Gakpo equalised with 12 minutes remaining.
But the drama wasn’t over. In the 84th minute, Bruno Fernandes delivered a clever pass into the area that found Harry Maguire, who headed past Giorgi Mamardashvili to seal victory for the Red Devils — their first win at Anfield since January 2016.
The result marked Amorim’s first back-to-back league wins since taking charge last autumn.
United also moved up to ninth in the Premier League standings.
Liverpool, meanwhile, ended the weekend in third place, trailing leaders Arsenal by four points and sitting one behind Manchester City — both of whom won their matches against Fulham and Everton respectively.
Several Liverpool players struggled to make an impact against United, including Alexander Isak, Milos Kerkez, and Salah, who missed a clear opportunity in the second half.
In the 65th minute, Salah received the ball as Liverpool pressed toward the Kop and seemed to have only Senne Lammens to beat, but his close-range effort went wide, leaving the Anfield crowd stunned — including Jones, who appeared to begin celebrating before placing his hands on his head in disbelief.
Fans didn’t hold back on social media.
One said: “Bro, look at Curtis Jones pre-celebrating.”
Another added: “Curtis Jones blud thought he was in one of those Marcelo Ronaldo edits.”
A third claimed: “Who does Curtis Jones think he is lmao.”
While a fourth joked: “Best thing about this is that is Jones celebrating prematurely.”
To be fair to Jones, Salah’s prolific scoring record since arriving at Liverpool in 2017 usually makes chances like that seem automatic.
But this season, the forward has looked frustrated, with only two goals in eight Premier League matches.
Salah and Liverpool will aim to bounce back when they head to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday.
