Kevin de Bruyne had previously shared his thoughts on the idea of joining Liverpool, and with recent reports suggesting a possible move to Anfield this summer, his past remarks have regained attention.
After spending ten years at Manchester City, De Bruyne confirmed in April that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Since the announcement, several clubs have been rumored as potential destinations, with Liverpool—one of City’s Premier League rivals—reportedly already making an offer to secure his signature this summer. ..Continue Reading
Following the news, old footage of De Bruyne discussing Liverpool has resurfaced online, further reinforcing speculation about his future.
During his tenure under Pep Guardiola, the Belgian midfielder amassed 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph, cementing his legacy as one of the league’s greatest-ever players.
Despite his remarkable success with City, it is well known that De Bruyne grew up as a Liverpool supporter and once dreamed of playing for the club when he was a young aspiring footballer.
Speaking in a viral clip during his time at Genk, a young De Bruyne said: “My favourite team is Liverpool FC and my favourite player is Michael Owen. I’d like to play there.”
The midfielder later reinforced his childhood admiration for Liverpool in an interview with the Match of the Day magazine back in 2019.
He said: “I was a Liverpool fan. My family that live in England were all Liverpool supporters so I was, too. I loved Michael Owen because I was really small like him and quick, too.
“I compared myself to him at the time. I liked [Zinedine] Zidane and Ronaldinho too – those really skilful players.”
In another interview with Sky Sports in the same year, De Bruyne admitted that he ‘loved’ Anfield and praised Liverpool supporters for the atmosphere they created during matches.
He said: “I like Anfield, I like it a lot. I love people being on you, being noisy, that is what it’s all about. I love the passion of football.”
Although Liverpool journalists James Pearce and Ian Doyle have since played down reports suggesting Liverpool have already made an offer to De Bruyne, the door for the midfielder moving to Anfield appears to be open.
