De Gea injured for Spain in huge blow for Man Utd ahead of Liverpool game

Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea has suffered an injury in Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Sweden in what could be a huge blow for his team ahead of Liverpool clash.

The Red Devils goalkeeper was clearing the ball in the match when he appeared to pull his groin.

De Gea immediately dropped to the ground in pain but was able to walk off the pitch alone and was replaced by Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga.

De Gea will be in a race to get fit ahead of the weekend when Manchester United play host to rivals Liverpool in the Premier League.

United are just two points above the relegation zone and in desperate need of a good result against the League leaders, who are unbeaten in their opening eight matches.

De Gea was only making his first start for Spain head coach Robert Moreno.

The United stopper has been playing second fiddle to Chelsea keeper Kepa throughout 2019, with Luis Enrique’s successor having preferred the Basque in every match since stepping up to be manager.

However, Kepa’s late error in Norway on Saturday – giving away an injury time penalty in the 1-1 draw – saw David De Gea promoted back to the starting lineup in Stockholm.

But, De Gea pulled off a truly outstanding save to keep out a goalbound header during Spain’s European Championship qualifier against Sweden before being taken off with injury.

However, United second shot-stopper Sergio Romero will get his opportunity if De Gea does not recover in time.
