According to The Sun, the club is reportedly weighing up a move for their former long-time goalkeeper.
Sources suggest United have been made aware of a clause in De Gea’s Fiorentina deal that could allow him to depart for a modest fee.
The report also claims that behind-the-scenes conversations have quietly begun, especially after De Gea impressed during a recent friendly appearance at Old Trafford.
Following that match, the 34-year-old hinted at a future reunion with United fans, leading many to believe he could be open to rejoining the Premier League side.
De Gea said in a social media post: “A magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford — my home.
“From the bottom of my heart — I want to say thank you for the reception — for all the love you showed me.
“To the supporters that never stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again. We’ve seen it all!”
De Gea featured in 545 matches for Manchester United from 2011 to 2023, placing him seventh on the club’s all-time appearance chart.
His departure came two summers ago following unresolved contract negotiations, leading to his exit on a free transfer. Manchester United subsequently brought in André Onana from Inter Milan for £43.8 million as his successor.
After spending the entire 2023–24 season unattached, De Gea eventually joined Fiorentina in the summer, marking a new chapter in his career.
“I know it’s been some years at United where they have struggled a bit, but this is one of the best clubs in the world,” De Gea on his hopes for United in the upcoming season.
“It’s a massive club. Hopefully this year with the signings and the manager starting a new era, they can do something big.
“Let’s see, hopefully they can win something and be there where they deserve.”
