De Gea sends warning to Henderson over battle to be Man Utd’s no.1

David De Gea has sent a warning to Dean Henderson he has ‘a lot of years’ left at the club and has no plans to give up on his battle to be Manchester United’s no.1.

The duo shared duties last season but the Spaniard was mostly the favoured choice throughout the campaign and he was selected ahead of Henderson for the UEFA Europa League final.

After a campaign of rivalling one another, Solskjaer had intimated he would make a concrete decision on both players for the new season.

Tom Heaton was signed earlier this summer to bloat the club’s goalkeeping department and Henderson made it clear that he will not accept another campaign as De Gea’s understudy.

But De Gea is in no mood to be the one to miss out, with the goalie warning his rival that his future remains at Old Trafford.

‘It’s been a lot of years at the club and a great source of pride for me to have been able to play for a club like Manchester United for so many seasons now,’ said De Gea.

‘But you have to live in the present, I think I still have a lot of years ahead of me at the club. I’m excited about that, feeling strong and I’m very keen to do well.

‘I feel great in myself, high in confidence and I think it should be – and has to be – an important season for all of us.’

The Red devils beat Everton 4-0 in their final pre-season friendly game and Henderson was unavailable after being given time off to recover from Covid-19.

It’s unclear whether Henderson will return in time for the season opener against Leeds but De Gea remains the favourite to start the campaign as number one.

United hope to complete the signing of Raphael Varane in time for the player to be registered for the first game of the season but he’s likely to have to settle for a place on the bench at best.
