Frenkie de Jong makes decision over Man Utd move & Erik ten Hag reunion

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong is set to reject the chance to join Manchester United this summer due to their lack of Champions League football.

Earlier this week, reports claimed the Red devils were in the driving seat to sign De Jong at the end of the campaign, with Barcelona keen to balance their finances by selling their £65m signing.

De Jong would also have the opportunity to link back up with United manager Erik ten Hag, who he played under for nearly two years at Ajax.

Reports this week have claimed that Ten Hag has made the signing of De Jong one of his main priorities for United’s summer window.

But according to Cadena SER, De Jong has ‘no interest’ in joining them as they are out of the UEFA Champions League.

De Jong is reported to have told those close to him that his preference is to stay at Barcelona but if he were to leave this summer, he would only be willing to join a team who can win the Champions League.

Manchester City, Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain have also been monitoring De Jong’s situation at Barca.

Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo claim that Barca manager Xavi has also made it clear to De Jong that he is part of his plans going forward.

‘He is playing at a very good level and has to continue here – he can be one of the best midfielders in the world for years to come,’ Xavi said when asked about De Jong’s future last month.

‘If it were up to me, I would continue here for many more years. He is very important and can mark an era here.

‘He has to score, assist and he has to be the protagonist.’
