A lengthy transfer saga ensued with United even reportedly agreeing a fee with Barcelona amid the La Liga team’s financial difficulties.
De Jong remained determined to stay at the Camp Nou, though, with Man United eventually ending their interest and signing Casemiro from Real Madrid instead.
It has now been reported in Spain that De Jong was left furious over Barcelona’s attempts to offload him and it damaged his relationship with the Spanish club’s hierarchy.
But, De Jong has since calmed down and Barcelona are now believed to be plotting a new long-term deal for the 26-year-old.
Barcelona consider De Jong to be one of the best midfielders but they want to make him take a pay cut for the next two years.
It remains to be seen how De Jong will react to this demand, but it is believed that he is very happy at the club since he moved from Ajax in 2019.
De Jong has had 16 goals and 21 assists across 190 matches for Barcelona, helping them land the Copa del Rey trophy in 2021 and La Liga title in 2023.
He has 54 caps for the Netherlands and represented his country at Euro 2020 and at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
