Chelsea this summer, despite previously agreeing personal terms with Manchester United.
The young striker has attracted interest from multiple clubs following an impressive season with Ipswich Town, despite the team’s struggles and eventual relegation from the Premier League.
Although Ipswich endured a difficult campaign, Delap stood out by delivering strong performances and scoring several goals, reinforcing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising forwards.
His availability has sparked significant interest due to a relatively affordable release clause that became active after Ipswich’s drop to the Championship.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United were prepared to trigger the clause and had engaged in discussions with Delap over personal terms.
While reports initially suggested he had reached an agreement with United, he had yet to finalize his decision.
Now, Delap has reportedly given his approval for a move to Chelsea, with the transfer nearing completion.
Chelsea’s qualification for the Champions League strengthened their position in securing Delap, as they finished the season on a high note under Enzo Maresca.
In contrast, Manchester United endured a disappointing campaign, finishing in the lower half of the table and missing out on European competition.
Newcastle United and Everton had also shown interest in signing Delap, but he appears set to join Chelsea, where he will compete with Nicolas Jackson for a spot in the squad.
Chelsea’s successful season saw them not only secure Champions League football but also claim silverware, winning the Conference League in a dominant final performance against Real Betis.
After Chelsea came from a goal down to thrash Betis, Blues captain Reece James told TNT Sports: ‘It’s a great feeling.
‘As the game went on we grew into it and thankfully we scored four goals in the second half.
‘Coming into this competition was something we had to win. Next season we go again in the Champions League.’
