Edouard Mendy has returned to Chelsea after suffering an injury during a training session with Senegal’s national team.

The 28-year-old was signed in a £22m deal from Rennes last month and immediately replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga as Frank Lampard’s first-choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge.

Edouard Mendy kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut last week as Chelsea sealed a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace

But he could now be set for a spell on the sidelines after he was forced to withdraw from Senegal’s squad on Thursday after suffering an injury.

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed the former Rennes goalie suffered an injury to his right thigh while in training on Wednesday.

Mendy was sent for medical tests in Rabat but has now withdrawn from Senegal’s squad and has returned to the blues for further examinations and treatment.

Senegal will play friendly matches against Morocco on Friday and Mauritania next Tuesday.

But, Mendy could now be unavailable for Chelsea’s next Premier League game against Southampton aftet the international break on October 17.

Kepa, who kept a clean sheet in Spain’s draw against Portugal on Wednesday evening, could be handed a opportunity to reclaim his place in the team.

Speaking about his future earlier this week, Kepa said: ‘I feel good, strong and confident. ‘Maybe it’s not the dream situation, but sometimes these things happen. I am confident I will turn my form around.

‘I do not have the feeling of being a substitute. We have three goalkeepers and the level is very high.’
