England charged by UEFA over laser pointer during penalty & ‘disturbance’ during national anthem

England

UEFA have confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have started against England in the wake of their Euro 2020 semi-final victory over Denmark, with the use of a ‘laser pointer’ by a fan included on the charge list.

A green light was visible as Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was targeted before Harry Kane’s goal in the first-half of extra time.

Schmeichel saved Kane’s initial penalty but the England skipper made no mistake on the rebound and they held firm to secure a place in the final of the Euro 2020.

An own goal from Simon Kjaer had earlier cancelled out Mikkel Damsgaard’s superb free-kick and the two sides could not be separated after 90 minutes.

The English FA have also been charged after Denmark’s national anthem was ‘disrupted’ and flares were set off before the start of the game on Wednesday.

They could be slapped with a €500 fine per firework and a fine of €8,000 for the laser pointer. The disturbance caused during Denmark’s anthem will likely result in a financial punishment.

‘The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course,’ a statement from UEFA said.
