Cesc Fabregas says ‘fed up’ Chelsea player is being overlooked by teammates

Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has suggested Timo Werner is being hampered by his teammates’ inability to spot his runs, with the player looking ‘fed up’ as a result.

The Germany international arrived at the club last summer in a £47.5m move from RB Leipzig, though after netting 28 goals in the Bundesliga, he managed only six in his maiden season in the Premier League.

Werner was guilty of missing a number of chances, which ultimately prompted Chelsea to fork out another £97.5m on Romelu Lukaku to provide a finishing touch up front.

His struggles have continued this campaign, netting just once in seven league games so far in a 3-1 win over Southampton, while he has played just 44 minutes in the Champions League.

Fabregas, though, remains a huve fan of Werner and his run-making and feels his issue at the moment is that his teammates are not feeding him when the player looks to get in behind.

During a Q&A on Twitter on Thursday, Fabregas was asked about his thoughts on Werner and replied: ‘He makes so many good runs but sometimes they either don’t see him or don’t play the pass. He looks fed up sometimes.’

The Spaniard, who spent four-and-a-half seasons at Chelsea, was also asked about Andreas Christensen, who is out of contract with the London club next summer when he can leave on a free transfer.

‘What a player,’ said the Monaco midfielder. ‘Very underrated. He’s very shy and doesn’t make too much noise because he hardly makes mistakes.’

Werner scored his first Premier League goal since February in the victory over Southampton, with Tuchel saying after the game: ‘We are all relieved, him and me and the whole club.

‘Every time he scores we have the feeling there is a VAR decision to take it away from him, there have been a lot of very narrow decisions. I remember one against Liverpool that was super close.

‘He has to keep on going and a lot of things to improve. We’re happy and relieved that he scored. It was very, very important goal for us to secure the win. And on the other hand he was there when he needed to be.’
