With both clubs aiming to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, the outcome could be significant come season’s end.
However, the match began in the worst possible way for Enzo Maresca’s men, as goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card just five minutes in—shortly before United skipper Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring.
Things went further downhill for Chelsea when Palmer, one of their key players, was substituted in the 21st minute. Fans believe they deciphered what he said to Mainoo, his England teammate, during the incident.
As Palmer made his way off the field, replaced by Andrey Santos, he visibly showed his frustration by throwing an object to the ground.
After cooling off, he was seen talking to Mainoo on the sidelines. Many Chelsea fans are convinced Palmer was informing his England colleague of a possible injury setback.
One fan shared on X: “I believe Palmer told Mainoo he has a groin injury from reading lips and he pointed to his groin area.”
Another added: “Cole Palmer has ice on his groin. His sub was injury related.”

But not all reactions were sympathetic. A critical supporter posted: “I know they’re mates, but Palmer’s little smirk with Mainoo as he walks off, feels like a slap in the face to those who’ve travelled up there today.”
Some fans also speculated that Palmer appeared to gesture toward his groin while speaking with manager Enzo Maresca as he exited the pitch.
Earlier this season, the 23-year-old had to be pulled from Chelsea’s squad during warm-ups before a clash against West Ham United, later missing the subsequent match versus Fulham before making his return after the September international break.
