With a slow start to the winter window, clubs are anticipated to finalize some deals ahead of the February 3 deadline.
Manchester United is seeking a new left-back due to Luke Shaw’s ongoing fitness issues and might also consider signing a new striker if a suitable deal arises. ..Continue Reading
Upon joining the club in November, Amorim acknowledged that transforming United would take time, but the task appears more daunting than initially expected.
United has won just two of their last nine league matches and remains in the bottom half of the Premier League table, closer to the relegation zone than to the Champions League spots.
Ferdinand believes Amorim would benefit from clearing out some underperforming players and suggests Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia should be moved on.
Rashford has been linked with several domestic and international clubs after revealing last month that he was ‘ready’ for a new challenge.
Antony is also eager to leave Old Trafford after a disappointing stint in Manchester, with La Liga club Real Betis closing in on a January deal for the Brazilian.
Meanwhile, Malacia appears to be on the verge of leaving before the window closes, as United aims to bring in left wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.
When asked about the future of Rashford, Antony and Malacia, Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: ‘I think Antony is going. Someone told me he was going to Real Betis or somewhere like that.
‘Get them out man! Sorry, I’m just being honest. The more those guys are around… there’s just bad noise.
‘They all want to go, they’re all happy to go, so get them out and start afresh. If there’s players around who are unsettled and not happy and it’s not going to plan, it’s like a cancerous, bad energy and it spreads around the changing room.
‘It makes things morbid and depressing. It would have been alright if the team was flying because those players just get left behind, but it’s especially bad when you’re not winning.’
Ferdinand’s former club endured a tough festive period, losing four matches within 12 days. However, they had a more encouraging start to 2025, securing a draw against Liverpool and defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup.
Despite needing three late goals to overcome bottom-placed Southampton, United were thoroughly outplayed by Brighton over the weekend.
Following the 3-1 loss to Brighton, Amorim harshly labeled his Manchester United squad as ‘perhaps the worst’ in the club’s 147-year history.
‘It’s a really bold statement to say they are the worst ever,’ ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman said on Amorim’s comments. ‘I personally wouldn’t enjoy being called out like this.
‘It would probably fire me up – which is probably the intent – but no one wants to be known as the worst team ever. It’s probably an honest and right on the mark statement.’
Manchester United will face Europa League rivals Rangers on Thursday night, with Rangers trailing arch-rivals Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership standings.
In the Europa League group stage, only one point separates United and Rangers, with the Scottish team recently drawing against Tottenham in their latest European match.
