Their hard-fought 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday was just the 11th victory of Amorim’s tenure, but it did little to bolster confidence within the squad, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League standings after 27 matches. ..Continue Reading
Patrick Dorgu’s first-half red card disrupted United’s plans to play on the front foot, but this isn’t the first time the Red Devils have appeared more comfortable when they deviate from Amorim’s strategies.
While Fernandes defended Amorim’s vision of playing attractive, attacking football, he acknowledged that there is still much work to be done to make the new boss’ tactics effective.
“We know we have to stick to what we’re training, what we’re supposed to do,” he told TNT Sports. “It could be that you could feel in moments it’s not working, but for some reason the manager wants us to do that and if he wants us to do that…
“They watch so many games, they prepare themselves, we have a big staff, not only the ones that came with him but the ones who were already here, we have great people behind the team to work on that so if they do that in the right way, we just have to come on the pitch and show it.”
Crucially, Fernandes’ use of the phrase “for some reason” was not seen as confusion about Amorim’s persistence but rather as an affirmation that there is a rationale behind Amorim’s strategy.
United’s upcoming fixtures include the FA Cup fifth-round match against Fulham on Sunday, followed by a Europa League trip to Real Sociedad.
Next weekend, they will return to Premier League action against Arsenal.
