“change the energy” and help restore Man United to its former glory.
Amorim, who previously managed Sporting Lisbon, began his role at United this week. His first match in charge will be an away game against Ipswich in the Premier League next Sunday.
Fernandes, who made a similar move from Sporting to United, is excited to work alongside his fellow Portuguese and feels that Amorim’s presence will inspire the entire club.
Reflecting on Amorim’s success at Sporting, where he won two league titles in four years, United captain Fernandes said: “I hope he does the same here because, you know, sometimes a person can change the energy of a space, if it’s the right moment.
“We hope that he can come and that this is the right moment for him to come and bring his energy, bring his qualities and his knowledge of football, because he’s done something really, really special at Sporting.
“If someone doubts that, it’s about just looking at the past. Sporting was about 20 years without winning the league and he got them back to winning the league.
“He won it two times in four years with a really youthful team, in a moment of change. So hopefully he can do the same here for us and hopefully it’s going to be a successful time for all of us.”
Amorim is unable to lead his first training session until his work visa is approved.
However, the 39-year-old was present at United’s training facility this week, where he met with officials and players and familiarized himself with the club’s environment.
With many of United’s players away on international duty, only a few individuals—primarily those recovering from injuries—had the chance to meet the new manager at the club’s training center.
Despite this, Amorim hinted that he plans to maintain the same style of play that brought him success at Sporting, where his teams were known for their attacking, bold football.
Addressing a group of United players in the gymnasium at the training complex, Amorim said: “I’m thrilled to be here and guys – we have to have fun.”
