Fernandes criticises Alejandro Garnacho after Man Utd’s win over Real Sociedad

Bruno Fernandes concedes Alejandro Garnacho’s attitude problem hindered his start of the campaign for Manchester United.

Garnacho scored his first senior goal for the Red devils on Thursday as Erik ten Hag’s side sealed a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League.

The 18-year-old has barely played for United this season, with Ten Hag revealing last week that he was unhappy with the player’s attitude during the team’s pre-season preparations.

Fernandes has now backed up Ten Hag’s assessment of Garnacho’s problems inside United’s dressing room and believes he did not deserve to start games until he showed signs of improvement.

‘He was good but he knows we expect a lot from him,’ Fernandes told BT Sport after United’s victory over Real Sociedad. ‘Obviously he’s still really young, he’s doing really well.

‘At the beginning of the season he was not at his best. In the [pre-season] tour he didn’t have the best attitude that he should have, and that’s why he didn’t get his chances until now.

‘He’s getting his chances because he’s training better, he’s got a different attitude and he’s deserving his chances.’

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes has praised Garnacho’s recent displays and believes the winger has shown his United teammates that his attitude is changing.

‘He said that was pre-season so he was obviously a little bit big for his boots, maybe a little bit above his station,’ said Scholes.

‘I think he did go with Argentina, playing with Messi, maybe he thought he’s coming back, ‘this is me, I’m part of this team’.

‘But he’s a young lad, he’s going to learn, obviously his attitude has changed and we’re seeing the benefits of that.

‘He looks a really top class young player, still a long way to go, he’s 18 years of age, he was really good last week in the home game and scored a really good goal tonight, so there was clearly an attitude problem but it seems like he’s got over it.’
