be available for Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool next week.
Fernandes received his third red card of the season on Thursday night, during Ruben Amorim’s side’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves, who dominated for large portions of the game.
The 30-year-old, already on a yellow card, was sent off by referee Tony Harrington after a collision with Wolves defender and fellow Portuguese player Nelson Semedo.
Initially, there was some uncertainty about whether Fernandes would receive a one or two-match ban.
However, because his red card against Spurs in October was overturned, he will only serve a one-game suspension, missing the home game against Newcastle on December 30.
Fernandes, the first United player to be sent off three times in a season since Nemanja Vidic in 2008/09, was a major topic in Ruben Amorim’s post-match press conference.
“I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always wants to go for the ball,” said Amorim when asked about his sending off.
“It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow [card]. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also.”
In another interview with Amazon Prime, Amorim added: “The sending off was really hard for us. It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that.”
In addition to Fernandes, Manchester United will also be missing midfielder Manuel Ugarte for the match against Newcastle, as the Uruguayan received his fifth yellow card of the season in the game against Wolves.
Ugarte, who has been a key player for the club recently, was cautioned in the second half for a foul on Goncalo Guedes as Vitor Pereira’s team attempted a counter-attack.
