France dressing room reaction to penalty as Mbappe left “very affected”

France head coach Didier Deschamps has given insight into the immediate reaction to the team’s shock European Championships exit.

Deschamps’ side looked destined to make it to the quarter-finals as they came from a goal down to take a 3-1 lead against Switzerland.

But their opponents came back to force extra-time with a last-gasp goal before eventually prevailing 5-4 on penalties.

The first nine penalty takers found the net before PSG forward Kylian Mbappe saw his effort saved by Yann Sommer to to eliminate France out of the tournament.

Speaking after the clash, Deschamps conceded there was “a lot of sadness in the dressing room” in the aftermath as he revealed nobody was angry with Mbappe.

Deschamps said: “No-one is really angry with Kylian. “We have had many magnificent moments together and there’s a lot of sadness in the dressing-room.”

Speaking on beIN Sports, Deschamps said Mbappe was “very affected” by his miss.

“Nobody can be annoyed with him,” Deschamps said. “When you take the responsibility, it can happen. He is obviously very affected by it.”

France skipper Hugo Lloris insisted no blame would be placed on Mbappe after his miss led to their exit.

“We win together, we lose together,” Lloris told beIN Sports. “We are all responsible for being eliminated at this stage of the competition. There is no pointing fingers.

“We had to deal with injuries, but we have no right to make excuses. This is a competition.”
