How many games Nicolas Jackson will miss after red card at Club World Cup

Nicolas Jackson is facing yet another suspension following his latest red card during Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign.

The Senegalese forward was sent off just four minutes after entering the pitch in Friday’s Group D defeat to Flamengo, who overturned a first-half deficit to win 3-1. ..Continue Reading

His reckless challenge on Ayrton Lucas came at a critical moment, compounding Chelsea’s collapse and leaving manager Enzo Maresca with limited options.

This marks Jackson’s second straight red in just over a month, the previous coming in May during a Premier League clash with Newcastle United, where he was dismissed for elbowing Sven Botman.

That incident led to a three-match domestic ban, ruling him out of the final two league fixtures and the opening game of the new season.

As for the Club World Cup, Jackson will miss at least one match—the final group stage game against ES Tunis—due to FIFA’s standard one-match suspension for red cards.

However, the ban could be extended if the Disciplinary Committee deems the offense serious enough.

Red cards earn a player a one-match suspension in Club World Cup matches. Fifa’s guidance states: ‘Any player or official given a red card will miss their team’s subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions – e.g. an additional suspension or a fine – may be imposed.

‘Red cards will not be wiped at any point during the tournament. If a player is sent off during the semi-finals, he will be suspended for the final.’

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee holds the authority to extend suspensions if an incident is deemed particularly severe—a power they’ve already exercised during this tournament.

Earlier this week, Boca Juniors players Ander Herrera and Nicolás Figal were each hit with four-game bans following red cards in their opening match against Benfica.

Herrera was sent off for confronting a staff member while attempting to reach the referee, an act categorized as unsportsmanlike behavior.

Figal received a straight red late in the game for a challenge on Florentino Luis, resulting in a suspension for violent conduct—an infraction that could also apply to Nicolas Jackson.

As it stands, Jackson will miss Chelsea’s final group stage match against ES Tunis, scheduled for early Wednesday morning.

Should FIFA deem his offense more serious, he could also be sidelined for potential knockout round fixtures.
