He delivered another strong showing on the left flank, having netted his first goal for Chelsea in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
With the game at 1-0 against Spurs courtesy of Joao Pedro’s 34th-minute strike, Maresca opted to replace Garnacho on 66 minutes with Jamie Gittens.
Still yet to play a full match since joining Chelsea, Garnacho appeared visibly frustrated, shaking his head repeatedly while seated on the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Fan reactions were divided—some criticized his behavior, while others argued he shouldn’t have been taken off and pointed out that none of his teammates sat beside him.
One fan wrote: “Does Garnacho think he will walk into our team and constantly get 90 mins?”
A second asked: “Why is Garnacho angry?”
A third stated: “Someone needs to remind Garnacho where he is. It’s Chelsea. Not every substitution means you had a bad game. Over here we rotate players.”
Others came to his defense, with one writing: “Garnacho didn’t deserve that sub.”
A second said: “Absolutely unnecessary substitution of Garnacho.”
And a third added: “Garnacho is simply more impactful than Gittens and this sub shouldn’t have happened this soon.”
Chelsea managed to preserve their 1-0 victory, although Gittens missed a late opportunity to extend the lead.
The team climbed to fourth place in the Premier League table with 17 points from 10 games, but clubs like Aston Villa, Manchester City, Sunderland and Liverpool still have matches to play and could surpass them depending on results.
