Garnacho’s time at Old Trafford has already seen him claim major domestic honors, including the Carabao Cup and FA Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
With his career trajectory soaring, more achievements seem inevitable for the young Argentine. In the coming weeks, he has the chance to secure a significant honor that even Messi doesn’t have in his trophy cabinet.
Garnacho has been shortlisted for the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award, making him a strong contender for the prestigious prize.
His breathtaking bicycle kick against Everton last season is among the nominees, though he faces tough competition for the award, which celebrates the best goal of the past year.
“I can’t believe it to be honest,” Garnacho said about his wonder strike after the 3-0 win at Everton.
“I didn’t see how it went in. I just listened around and said: ‘oh my God.’ For me, one of the best goals I have ever scored.”
Walter Bou, representing Argentine club Lanus, earned a nomination for a similarly spectacular goal.
West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus also made the shortlist, thanks to his dazzling solo effort against Freiburg in the Europa League.
Notably, Lionel Messi, Garnacho’s Argentine teammate, has never claimed the Puskás Award. For Garnacho to secure it so early in his career would be a remarkable achievement.
Earlier this year, Manchester United officially crowned Garnacho’s breathtaking strike as their Goal of the Season, surpassing even Wayne Rooney’s iconic overhead kick in the Manchester derby against City.
“I have always said, it is actually harder to score with your shin!” Rooney laughed speaking to ManUtd.com.
“I honestly don’t know [whether it struck my shin or my foot].
“I think Garnacho’s was better. I think Garnacho’s goal was a better goal, but I think doing it against Manchester City was a better game.”
Garnacho appears to be adjusting well to life under new manager Ruben Amorim, having featured in both of the 39-year-old’s first two matches in charge.
Manchester United return to Premier League action this weekend, with Amorim’s team set to face Everton at Old Trafford for the Portuguese coach’s first home league game.
