Alejandro Garnacho aims swipe after being snubbed by Argentina for World Cup call-up

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has aimed a dig at Argentina after he was overlooked for a late call-up to their World Cup team.

With less than a week until their World Cup campaign starts, Argentina have been forced to make two changes to their squad after injuries to Joaquin Correa and Nicolas Gonzalez.

Garnacho was tipped by many to secure a last-minute call-up with Argentina after his outstanding performances for Manchester United in recent weeks.

But the 18-year-old has missed out on a place in Qatar as Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni opted to replace Gonzalez with Atletico Madrid winger Angel Correa, while Joaquin Correa has been replaced by Atlanta United star Thiago Almada, who was named 2022 MLS Newcomer of the Year last month.

The decision does not appear to have gone down well with Garnacho, who liked a post on Twitter from a user who claimed he was overlooked because he is Spanish.

Garnacho was born in Madrid and is eligible to play for both Spain and Argentina. He has represented both nations at youth level but is waiting for his first senior cap.

The closest Garnacho has come to his first senior international cap was with Argentina in the month of March as he was called up for their World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador, but, he did not make an appearance.

Garnacho still has the chance to switch allegiances and could now choose to play for Spain after being snubbed by Argentina.

Spain begin their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica next week Wednesday, while they will also play Germany and Japan in Group E.

Argentina, meanwhile, are in Group C with Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland.
