Greenwood becomes youngest United player to hit milestone in 36 years

Manchester United destroyed Tranmere Rovers 6-0 to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, with Mason Greenwood also among those that found the back of the net.

Greenwood’s second half penalty – given after Tahith Chong was brought down by Tranmere goalkeeper Scott Davies – was his 10th goal of the campaign.

He’s the youngest Manchester United player ever to score 10 goals for the team since Norman Whiteside in 1984 – around 36 years ago.

Just 13 of his 34 matches for the club have come from the start of games, making his 10-goal haul all the more impressive from him.

Harry Maguire opened the scoring from distance – his first goal for Manchester United – before Diogo Dalot scored from the right-hand side of the box.

Jesse Lingard scored just his second goal of the campaign to put United in total control of the game after only 16 minutes, before a third defender, Phil Jones sent a looping header into the back of the net to make it four in favour of the Red devils.

It was already five by half-time after Anthony Martial’s bent strike from distance before Mason Greenwood made it six goals to nil before the hour mark.

United hadn’t scored six in a match since Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit and it was all in all an excellent day for Solskjaer’s side.
