Mason Greenwood breaks Wayne Rooney’s record in Man Utd’s win over Villa

Mason Greenwood made a spectacular finish against Aston Villa to not only give Manchester United the lead in the game but also write his name into history books.

The 19-year-old forward put the Red devils 2-1 ahead when he struck in the second half before Edinson Cavani got the third goal.

The goal was Greenwood’s 16th in the Premier League, breaking the club record previously held by Wayne Rooney.

The England attacker has now overtaken the United legend as their all-time top scoring teenager in the English top-flight. Rooney had netted 15 goals for the club by his 20th birthday.

“It is some achievement. We don’t really want to go behind but it gives us a little boost to come back and get the win,” Greenwood told BBC Sport after his side came back from a goal down to win for the 10th time this season.

“It was well improved [in the second half]. Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer, United manager] said his bits in the changing room. It seemed to pay off.

“To be on the main stage and scoring important goals like today, it means a lot. We just concentrate on ourselves, we take it game by game. We want to get as many points as we can and keep the pressure on.”

Reflecting on his goal at Villa, Greenwood told MUTV: ‘It was a good goal. “I just knew that he [Tyrone Mings] was coming tight to you in the box, so if you get a little movement then you can get half a yard. I finished it well, I’m happy with my goal today.

“Hopefully there are many more to come. I’ll try and keep scoring goals so no one else can come and break the record in the future! I’m happy scoring goals.”

The England international now has 28 competitive goals at Old Trafford. Only two players scored more in all competitions for United as teenagers – Norman Whiteside, who scored 39, and George Best (37).
