Mason Greenwood’s stance on Man Utd return after Ratcliffe lifeline

Mason Greenwood hesitates to resume playing for Manchester United, even though club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed willingness for the striker to come back.

Greenwood went on loan to Getafe in August following United’s decision that it would be beneficial for his career to continue elsewhere besides Old Trafford.

This determination came after a thorough investigation, during which the club found Greenwood innocent of the initial charges leveled against him.

‘Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.

‘That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for,’ a club statement said.

Greenwood has made significant strides in revitalizing his career in Spain, and Getafe is eager to retain him following his impressive inaugural season in Madrid.

Additionally, both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have shown interest in acquiring him, should United indicate a willingness to sell.

However, Ratcliffe stated last week that a fresh decision regarding Greenwood’s future would be made once the club determines his character.

Although Greenwood expressed a desire to stay at Manchester United in 2023, he is now inclined to remain in Spain, as reported by the Athletic.

Greenwood believes the club could have offered more support during the investigation. Moreover, he is mindful of the impact relocating his family to the UK would have and wishes to maintain the progress they’ve achieved in Spain this season.

With 18 months remaining on his contract, United have the option to extend it by another 12 months.
