Grimsby Town took a cheeky swipe at Ruben Amorim and Manchester United ahead of their League Two fixture against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, continuing the fallout from their stunning midweek upset.
Back at Blundell Park, Grimsby were riding high after their dramatic Carabao Cup victory over United, where they surged to a 2-0 lead before late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire forced a penalty shootout. ..Continue Reading
In a nail-biting finish, the underdogs triumphed 12-11, earning a spot in the third round against Sheffield Wednesday.
For Manchester United, the defeat marked another painful chapter in a string of disappointing performances under Amorim, who took the reins in late 2024.
Despite growing calls for change and whispers of a potential move to Benfica, the Portuguese manager remained in charge for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford.
On Friday, Amorim even went as far as to say, “sometimes I hate my players”, during a press conference.
He added: “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. I need to improve on that, it’s going to be hard but now I’m focused on the next game.”
Judging by Amorim’s recent remarks, it seems clear that his stint at Old Trafford isn’t going smoothly. Still, that didn’t stop Grimsby Town from taking a playful jab at him.
On Saturday, the club shared a video across their social media channels featuring Mariners TV presenter Scott Woodthorpe appearing to poke fun at Amorim.
The clip referenced a moment during United’s loss when the manager was seen intensely focused on a tactics board.
The scene drew comparisons to Steve McClaren’s notorious “wally with the brolly” incident from his time managing England.
Reactions online were divided, with some finding the humor sharp, while others felt it missed the mark.
One fan said: “Some clubs are classy and respectful to fellow clubs and their managers. Then there is Grimsby Town.”
Another added: “Clowns… your only legacy is beating Man United.”
Former United full-back Phil Neville commented: “Not classy.”
Another supporter explained: “I’ve been good mates with @ScottWoodthorpe for many years and he’s been a wonderful human being, but this is hands down the best thing he’s ever done. Never been prouder. Exceptional banter.”
