Spanish authorities confirmed that the vehicle suffered a tire blowout while overtaking another car, causing it to crash and burst into flames. It remains unclear who was behind the wheel at the time of the incident.
Jota’s death comes just days after he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, the mother of their three children—two sons and a baby daughter.
He had shared a video of their wedding on Instagram only a day before the accident.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 in a deal worth around £40 million.
Since then, the Portuguese international became a key player at Anfield, helping the club win the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season under manager Arne Slot. He also previously played for Paços de Ferreira, Porto, and Atlético Madrid, and earned 49 caps for Portugal.
His brother, André, aged 26, was also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in from clubs, teammates, and fans across the globe.
A statement from The Guardia Civil said: ‘The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
‘It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.’
