This marked the end of a whirlwind few days for Guehi, who had been eager to make the switch to Anfield. However, Palace abruptly called off the deal in the final moments of the transfer window.
The London club had been confident they would bring in a replacement before the deadline, with Brazilian defender Igor Julio expected to arrive on loan from Brighton.
Once that plan was relayed to Liverpool, the Merseyside club began formalities to finalize the transfer.
Yet, Palace insisted on having a new left-footed centre-back physically present before approving Guehi’s departure. That condition wasn’t met, and the deal fell through.
When questioned about the situation during a post-match interview with ITV, Guehi remained tight-lipped, choosing not to reveal much about the behind-the-scenes drama.
When asked how the last eight days had been for him on the back of his transfer failed move, he smiled and said: ‘It’s been great.’
The 25-year-old defender was then asked about how it was joining up with England immediately after, and responded:
‘It’s always easy coming here, we’ve got such a good group of players, good group of staff. We’re working towards one goal, so it’s really enjoyable and always good to be here.’
Guehi has experienced a fluctuating role within the England squad under manager Thomas Tuchel, who continues to experiment with different defensive setups in pursuit of World Cup glory next year.
Despite the rotation, many believe Guehi deserves a permanent spot in the starting lineup.
On Tuesday, he was paired with Ezri Konsa—who also celebrated his debut goal for the national team—in a partnership that could become a familiar sight as preparations intensify ahead of next summer’s tournament in North America.
Tuchel, for his part, had nothing but admiration for Guehi following another productive international break.
‘It’s the example, it’s the example of how the boys were in the camp,’ Tuchel said. ‘Exactly like this, they put their personal interests aside and he was the best team-mate possible.
‘A fantastic performance, he was very strong for Crystal Palace and he showed it today on the pitch.’
