Ilkay Gundogan is “reportedly seeking an exit” from Barcelona after just one season with the club.
Gundogan left Manchester City after seven years and chose to join Barcelona in June of last year.
However, he only signed a two-year contract and is now entering the final year of that deal.
It seems Gundogan might be “headed for the exit door” during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to the Spanish publication “Sport,” the German international has “reportedly informed the club” that he wants to move on from the La Liga giants.
This could explain why Gundogan was entirely left out of Barcelona’s matchday squad in their La Liga opener, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Valencia.
The report suggests that the midfielder told the coaching staff that he has had “enough” and is hoping that all parties can work together to help him find an exit from the club.
As for where the 33-year-old might end up next, the report mentions that he has several admirers in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
However, one person who seems particularly eager to sign Gundogan is Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho.
The 61-year-old took the helm at Fenerbahce in June and has already been busy in the transfer market, securing permanent deals for Caglar Soyuncu, Cenk Tosun, and Youssef En-Nesyri, while also bringing in Allan Saint-Maximin on loan from Al-Ahli.
The report claims Mourinho is prepared to go to “extreme lengths” to land Gundogan, underscoring his determination to bring him to Fenerbahce.
Adding to the possibility of Gundogan moving to Turkey is the fact that he was born to Turkish parents.
Gundogan previously met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2018, although the meeting sparked controversy after the midfielder referred to Erdogan as “my president” despite not holding Turkish citizenship.
