Gusto, 22, drifted in at the far post, completely unmarked, to score his first goal in 165 professional matches. His celebration was full of emotion, joined by thrilled—and some clearly surprised—team-mates.
Inside the stadium, the goal eased the tension and helped Chelsea cruise to victory. Online, it sparked playful reactions, with injured defender Levi Colwill joking: “I don’t believe it. Mon garçon [my son] scored”.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca hopes this sparks a scoring streak for Gusto, stating: “Last season [Marc] Cucurella scored six or seven goals and hopefully Malo can score more goals this season.”
“Malo was close so many times and we like full-backs attacking and arriving inside the box. Malo is one of our main players because he allows us to be versatile. So we are very happy for Malo.”
Though Gusto says he’s “hungry for more”, his focus remains on winning silverware.
“It was a big win. The performance was really important for us before the international break,” said Gusto.
“We’re all young players, we have to keep building and to fight for titles. We are Chelsea. We want to show the fans and prove we can compete.
“Now we grow as a team. Last season was great in terms of titles, but this season we have to fight for more.”
Chelsea’s next fixture is away at Burnley on November 22, following the international break.
