The future of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres continues to attract major interest following the appointment of former Sporting manager Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
United have faced persistent scoring issues throughout the season under both Amorim and Erik ten Hag, making a prolific striker a top priority in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Gyokeres was in sensational form in the Primeira Liga before Amorim’s move to Old Trafford, naturally linking the Swedish forward with a United side in desperate need of attacking firepower after a poor Premier League campaign. ..Continue Reading
The 26-year-old ex-Coventry star is reportedly open to a return to English football, and while Manchester United seem an obvious destination, Arsenal are also believed to be strongly interested.
Though a reunion with Amorim might be enticing, it’s unlikely to be the decisive factor in Gyokeres’ final choice at the end of the 2024–25 season.
However, according to European transfer insider Christopher Michel, one particular sticking point could complicate United’s hopes of landing their prime striker target.
“Viktor Gyokeres will be a hot topic on the transfer market this summer!” exclaims Michel on X, formerly Twitter.
“But he wants to play [in the Champions League]. Arsenal and Chelsea are very interested, [Man Utd] is also looking closely, Amorim has developed him.”
With Amorim’s new team languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League, the biggest surprise is that they still have a way to meet that demand.
“To have a realistic chance, the club probably has to win the Europa League,” confirms Michel.
Manchester United kept their European hopes alive with a stunning comeback victory against Lyon in the quarter-finals earlier this month.
Their next challenge comes on Thursday as they travel to Bilbao for the first leg of their semi-final clash against Athletic Club.
Should United overcome the Basque side and go on to defeat either Tottenham Hotspur or Norway’s Bodø/Glimt in the final, Viktor Gyökeres may face a pivotal decision regarding his future.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that the striker is in a strong position, with full control over the next step in his career.
