French outlet L’Équipe reports that Arsenal are currently in talks with the Swedish international, with new sporting director Andrea Berta leading negotiations.
Gyökeres has reportedly informed the Gunners of his desire to join them, and his agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, is said to be close to reaching a verbal agreement.
However, Arsenal have yet to strike a deal with Sporting Lisbon.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas recently reiterated that no club has met their valuation for the striker.
Gyökeres’ representatives have accused the club of going back on a previous agreement to let him leave for €60 million plus €10 million in bonuses.
In response, Varandas has accused the player’s camp of attempting to “blackmail” the club.
If Arsenal and Sporting can come to terms, Gyökeres’ arrival would finally give Mikel Arteta the elite striker he’s been searching for.
Last season, Arteta had to rotate between Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard, and Raheem Sterling in the striker role due to injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Jesus is also expected to miss the beginning of the new season after suffering an ACL injury during an FA Cup match against Manchester United in January.
