Gyokeres is reportedly “set on” joining Manchester United, despite attracting interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
The prolific striker, who was playing for Championship side Coventry City less than 18 months ago, has already recorded three hat-tricks this season, including a standout performance in the Champions League against Manchester City.
United have been closely linked with Gyokeres for months, with speculation growing since his former manager, Ruben Amorim, took the reins at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have struggled with a lack of consistent goalscoring options this season, with Marcus Rashford deployed as a striker in Amorim’s debut match ahead of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Arsenal, too, have faced attacking challenges and were linked with several forwards over the summer, including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to secure Victor Osimhen on deadline day and have since been monitoring potential alternatives.
With a release clause of just £65 million, Gyokeres is expected to spark significant interest in the January transfer window.
According to The Sun, the striker views a move to United as the best choice for his career, especially given the opportunity to reunite with Amorim, even if it means turning down Arsenal and Chelsea—both of whom currently sit higher in the Premier League standings.
Gyokeres played a pivotal role in helping Sporting Lisbon clinch the Primeira Liga title last season and has been instrumental in their current campaign, with the team already leading the league by six points and sitting second in the revamped Champions League group stage.
Former Premier League defender William Gallas, an admirer of Gyokeres, has expressed doubts about Arsenal’s chances of landing the Swedish star, citing United as his most likely destination.
‘Arsenal have no chance of signing Viktor Gyokeres, he will choose Manchester United,’ Gallas told Genting Casino.
‘He will follow Ruben Amorim to United, I think Gyokeres will suit Man United’s team, too.’
Meanwhile, ex-Premier League boss Tim Sherwood has claimed Gyokeres is a ‘must’ for United, who he says lack ‘firepower’ up top.
‘Viktor Gyokeres, for me, is a must,’ he told Ladbrokes. ‘I mean, he’s a player who knows English football, albeit in the Championship, but he’s been a revelation in Portugal, we’ve seen him ripping it up in the Champions League.
‘And, above everything else, they need a striker, don’t they? When have you ever seen Man United with just one striker? In years gone by they’re had four in one squad!
‘They’ve always had firepower in that area, but at the moment, when I look at it, Joshua Zirkzee is not a striker. He’s not a striker. So that leaves them with one: Rasmus Hojlund.
‘Gyokeres has got a big buyout clause, I think, so they’re not going to be able to get him without getting some names out of the door, but he would massively improve that team, I’ve no doubt about that.’
