Henderson calls crisis talks with Premier League captains amid Super League backlash

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has organised an emergency meeting with his fellow Premier League captains to discuss the best course of action with the proposed Super League, according to reports.

Late on Sunday, Henderson’s Liverpool were unveiled as one of the 12 European clubs at the heart of the breakaway competition in an announcement which shook football to its core.

The Premier League’s other ‘big six’ teams were named alongside Liverpool as founding members immune from relegation along with other big European sides which include Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan.

After Liverpool’s draw with Leeds United, Jurgen Klopp and James Milner confirmed they were opposed to the new league as they appeared to align themselves against the club owners FSG.

The Reds have received widespread criticism for their involvement in the project and Henderson has taken matters into his hands by leading the players’ response in the Premier League, according to The Daily Mail.

The 30-year-old was at the forefront of the ‘#PlayersTogether’ committee which raised over £4m in donations for the NHS during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Henderson’s England team-mate, Harry Maguire, was livid after being left in the dark by Manchester United bosses over their plans to join the Super League.

Solskjaer’s squad were ‘seriously unimpressed’ to learn about their involvement only hours before their victory over Burnley and he confronted executive-vice chairman Ed Woodward over the way he handled the situation.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is meeting with reps of football’s governing bodies today and has said he will give those involved in the split a ‘straight red’ in what he branded a ‘nuclear war’.

‘The government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop,’ a Number 10 statement said.

‘He was clear that no action is off the table and the government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped.’
