How Man Utd missed out on Alphonso Davies transfer before he became Bayern star

Premier League fans may not have known much about Alphonso Davies before the Champions League game on Tuesday but they do now after Bayern’s 3-0 win against Chelsea.

The Bundesliga side all but sealed their spot in the last-eight with a comprehensive victory in London that was spearheaded by 19-year-old Davies.

The Canadian made the move to Europe from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018 for a fee of around £14.5million and was converted from a left winger to a left-back by Bayern.

Alphonso Davies was given time to settle at the club but he’s experienced a breakthrough this season, playing 26 matches so far.

But he saved his best display in a red shirt for his biggest test yet as Bayern Munich visited Stamford Bridge and Davies was outstanding in the game and also set up Lewandowski for the all important third goal.

Bayern will feel their gamble is finally paying off but they were far from the only clubs interested in the 19-year-old.

The Canadian star was widely scouted by Premier League side Manchester United after making his debut at the age of 15.

The Red Devils were keen on keeping a closer eye over Davies and invited him to Old Trafford for a three-week trial in the month of January 2018.

However, the Manchester Evening News claim that Davies’ rapid rise prevented him from making the trial as he was called up to train with Canada’s Olympic team at the same time and was then not granted permission by the Whitecaps to visit United so soon before the MLS season started in March.
