‘I joined Newcastle to win the Champions League’ – Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle can avoid relegation this campaign, and the club’s long-term ambition is to win the UEFA Champions League, says Bruno Guimaraes.

The London club agreed a £33.5m deal with Lyon to sign Guimaraes in the January transfer window.

Deals for players like Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood and Matt Targett were also sanctioned, taking their spending on signings in January to around £92million.

Although Newcastle are currently in 19th position, Guimaraes is confident they can maintain their status as a Premier League side.

When asked whether Newcastle can avoid the drop, Guimaraes told reporters: ‘Definitely, if not I wouldn’t have accepted to come here. With the new players & the manager we can achieve our main objective of staying in the Premier League.’

In terms of the future plan, the former Lyon star revealed that the club’s owners want to become a Champions League club and even win the competition eventually.

‘The owners were very up front and honest about it,’ he added. ‘They didn’t disguise that the main objective and challenge was remaining in the Premier League this season.

‘But in the seasons coming, the objective is to be in the Champions League and to eventually win the Champions League, so I believe in the project.

‘I believe in everything they spoke to me about and I’m really happy to be involved in this project.’
