Real Madrid is reportedly eyeing Konate as a free agent next summer, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Los Blancos after his own contract concluded.
Talks between Konate and Liverpool over a renewal have been ongoing for over a year, yet no deal has been finalized. While recent updates indicate optimism from the club about a new agreement, that confidence has fluctuated.
Unlike last summer, when Liverpool managed to secure a $13 million fee for Alexander-Arnold ahead of his contract’s expiration by leveraging the Club World Cup, a similar strategy may not apply to Konate.
As speculation grows, Konate’s earlier remarks about Real Madrid have resurfaced and could intensify transfer rumors.
Back in February, reports linked him with possible summer moves to both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
During that period, he spoke to French outlet Telefoot about his campaign and addressed the possibility of joining elite clubs like Madrid and PSG.
Asked about the links, he said: “To hear big clubs like that are showing interest in me is very flattering! Now I’m focusing on this season, giving it my all and I’ll let my agents take care of the rest.”
This week, online reports claimed Liverpool had made a final proposal to the French international. However, ahead of Sunday’s World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan, Konate refuted those claims and hinted at an upcoming decision.
“I’ve seen a lot of things,” he told journalists with a smile. “Liverpool have reportedly made me a new offer, I don’t know where that information came from. My agents are still in discussions with Liverpool. I hope my decision will be made very soon so I can announce it.”
Liverpool remains eager to tie Konate down to a fresh deal, as he continues to be one of Arne Slot’s most dependable players, having featured in all 15 Premier League and Champions League fixtures this term.
Despite that, his performances have varied — with standout displays against teams like Manchester United and Real Madrid occasionally offset by less consistent outings.
If Konate were to depart, especially without a transfer fee, it would represent a major setback for Slot’s squad.
To mitigate that risk, reports indicate Liverpool is exploring a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who is also approaching the end of his contract next summer.
