Ineos to veto Man Utd January transfer after questioning two deals

Manchester United are unlikely to pursue Karim Benzema, as Ineos is hesitant to sanction substantial deals for players past their prime, as per reports.

The Red Devils have shown interest in acquiring Al-Ittihad’s forward Benzema, who is reportedly dissatisfied in the Saudi Pro League and eager for a January departure.

In the wake of the news that Anthony Martial will be sidelined for the next 10 weeks, United is exploring potential signings to strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes.

However, the likelihood of securing Benzema seems low, as the Daily Mail indicates that Ineos aims to revamp the club’s recruitment strategy.

There has been a trend of short-term thinking in United’s recent signings, especially during the January transfer window.

In 2020, the club brought in Odion Ighalo on deadline day, but he failed to score in 12 Premier League appearances. Wout Weghorst, signed last season, had an even worse record, going scoreless in 17 league outings for the Red Devils.

United has also committed significant salaries to Casemiro and Raphael Varane, but Ineos reportedly questions the wisdom of these deals, considering both players’ apparent decline.

Casemiro, earning around £375,000-a-week, faced fitness issues in the summer and has been sidelined since November due to injury. Varane, earning £340,000-a-week, has struggled with injuries and briefly lost his place in the team.

Ineos, awaiting Premier League approval to take over at Old Trafford, is anticipated to reshape the club’s recruitment approach.

The focus is expected to shift towards signing players on the verge of their peak rather than high-profile players on the decline, such as Casemiro, Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite potential short-term challenges in attacking options, Ineos seems inclined to avoid approving a move for Benzema with a substantial salary commitment.

The belief is that, with United no longer participating in European competitions and playing one game a week, the existing squad should be sufficient.
