Romelu Lukaku is still firmly in Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte’s sights after the Belgian’s move to Juventus collapsed on Sunday.
The Manchester United striker was tipped for a move to Turin with Argentina forward Paulo Dybala going the other way.
But that deal is in shambles after Dybala told the club he did not want a move to Old Trafford. And United also were not willing to meet his huge salary demands.
Antonio Conte tried to sign Lukaku from Everton in 2016 when head coach at Chelsea, but Jose Mourinho managed to convince the striker to join the Red devils instead.
According to reports in Italy, Inter have put £73million on the table for Romelu Lukaku, with United looking to get back the £75m they paid for him in 2016.
The Inter Milan manager said: “We continue to work on it in the best possible way. I understand there are some gaps that need to be filled but at the moment I am very hopeful that this will happen.
“With Lukaku, we are talking about a good player, a striker I tried to buy in the past when I was Chelsea’s coach. We are talking about two big clubs — Juventus and Inter Milan — but honestly I don’t know.”
However, Manchester United have announced the signing of centre-back Harry Maguire today, after agreeing an £85m deal with Leicester City for the England international.
Inter were able to beat Spurs on penalties at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Inter Milan do not start their Serie A season until August 26 and face Valencia at the Mestalla on Saturday.
