Diogo Jota reacts as Liverpool closes in on Darwin Nunez transfer

Diogo Jota has described Darwin Nunez a ‘good player’ amid reports claiming Liverpool are closing in on a deal for the Benfica attacker.

The 22-year-old has turned heads having scored 34 goals in all competitions last campaign, including six in the UEFA Champions League.

Nunez scored in each leg of Benfica’s Champions League quarter-final game against Liverpool – the club who are attempting to sign him this summer window.

Reports claim Liverpool are ready to smash their transfer record as they have opened discussions with the Portuguese side over an £85m move for the Uruguay international.

Should the aforementioned fee be agreed, it would eclipse the £75million they paid to sign Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

Manchester United have also been linked with Nunez, but the player is said to favour a transfer to Anfield.

While Liverpool star Jota wouldn’t be drawn on the possibility of the Merseyside club signing Nunez, he did admit the youngster is a ‘good player’ after facing him with the Reds last campaign.

Speaking while on international duty for Portugal, Jota said: ‘I don’t know, I’m focused on the national team. The market will move, I have no idea what the signings could be.

‘I had the opportunity to play against him and he’s a good player, but I can’t say anything else at the moment.’

Meanwhile, Bayern are chasing Sadio Mane, who is reported to have informed Liverpool of his desire to leave Anfield this summer.

But they have reportedly reacted with anger to Bayern’s second bid of £23.5m, with additional add-ons of around £6.5m.
