After a misplaced pass led to a turnover, tensions flared between the pair—Keane shoved Gueye, who then reacted by striking the defender in the face with his left hand.
The ex-Paris Saint-Germain player was promptly sent off for violent conduct, with the Premier League’s Match Centre confirming it was “a clear strike to the face of Keane”.
Despite being reduced to ten men for most of the match, Everton secured a memorable away win thanks to a 29th-minute goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye had to escort Gueye off the pitch, but not before Keane delivered a blunt message.
Gesturing toward his head, the England defender appeared to say, “Are you f***ing stupid? F*** off.”
Everton showed grit to earn a 1-0 win over United, a result that lifted them to 11th in the standings.
After the match, Dewsbury-Hall shared that Gueye had addressed the team in the dressing room and “said his piece”.
The 36-year-old later posted a public apology on Instagram to Keane and the rest of the squad, while also praising their performance.
“I want to apologise first to my team-mate Michael Keane,” he wrote on his official Instagram account.
“I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my team-mates, the staff, the fans and the club. What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for.
“Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour. I’ll make sure it never happens again. UTT.”
Responding to the red card, manager David Moyes commented, “I like my players fighting each other if someone didn’t do the right action,” though he acknowledged that referee Tony Harrington had little option but to send Gueye off.
Gueye, who has featured in 12 Premier League matches this season, will now miss several games. He is set to serve a three-match suspension before joining Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations.
