Klopp aims dig at Chelsea spending when asked about Thiago move

Jurgen Klopp has made light of Chelsea’s huge summer window spending spree in response to a question about the Reds’ push to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bundesliga champions Bayern.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Thiago, with reports in Germany claiming that Klopp’s side will step up their efforts to sign the 29-year-old midfielder the coming days.

Thiago has only a year left on his current contract with Bayern and the European champions are demanding a £26.8m fee for the player, who has reportedly held discussions with Klopp about a move to the club.

But, Klopp has refused to publicly discuss about a move for the midfielder and claims Liverpool need to be cautious with the way they spend this summer after the coronavirus pandemic.

Jurgen Klopp also named Chelsea as a side with a ‘more positive outlook on the future’ in reference to their activity in the market this summer.

Having secured a £37.4m deal to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in February, Chelsea have also completed the signings of Werner and Ben Chilwell and are close to signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz for £89m.

When asked about Liverpool’s possible move for Thiago in an interview with Servus TV, Klopp said: ‘There are a lot of interesting players out there but if someone is interesting for us I can’t say right now.

‘Due to Covid-19 you have to think five times about what you can and what you can’t do. ‘We always have to pay attention to the financial aspect. We don’t know how much money will come in.

‘Nobody knows but it seems like some other teams have a more positive outlook on the future… if you look at Chelsea for example [laughs].

‘But I am very happy with my team right now. If something transfer related will happen we have to see.’
