Toni Kroos explains why Real Madrid don’t need Kylian Mbappe

Toni Kroos of Real Madrid remained tight-lipped regarding the much-discussed potential transfer of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.

Mbappe has once more emerged as a prime candidate for a transfer to Santiago Bernabeu this summer, after reportedly expressing his desire to exit Paris Saint-Germain upon his contract’s conclusion.

The French skipper, who has previously been on the brink of joining Real Madrid, notably in 2022 before renewing his contract with PSG, has suggested that he will disclose his future plans prior to Euro 2024.

This year, indications are strong that Mbappe is inclined towards leaving, with Real Madrid, a club that has long shown interest, being the probable next stop for the striker who recently played against Kroos in an international friendly.

While queries about Mbappe’s potential move have been directed at various France and Real Madrid players, given Mbappe’s status as one of the world’s top talents, Kroos opted to remain discreet on the matter.

‘If even he doesn’t know, how can I know? The important thing is to win things. It would be nice for Madrid, but I think we already have a good team,’ he said at a press conference.

Toni Kroos finds himself in a state of uncertainty regarding his tenure at Real Madrid, much like the ongoing speculation surrounding Kylian Mbappe’s transfer.

Over the past ten years since his transfer from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid, Kroos has played 455 matches, netting 28 goals and providing 95 assists.

He was a key component of the formidable midfield trio with Luka Modric and Casemiro, a group that contended with Barcelona’s renowned Iniesta-Xavi-Busquets combination for the title of the world’s finest.

However, uncertainty looms for Kroos after his one-year contract extension last season, leaving his future with Real Madrid for the 2024-25 season in question.

The emergence of a highly skilled young midfield, featuring Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, and the need to integrate Federico Valverde, complicates the situation.

At 34, Kroos, alongside 38-year-old Modric, confronts a less predictable future compared to 25-year-old Mbappe, who is not burdened by the looming specter of retirement.

Despite Tchouameni’s seemingly inadvertent hint about Mbappe’s potential transfer to Spain next summer, the French captain deflected the notion with humor.

Speaking to Telefoot, Tchouameni said: ‘The Spanish are aware of the player that Kylian is, although when they see him every day they will realise the player’s greatness’.

When Mbappe was asked about the comment on Monday, he joked that the Spaniards could see him regularly as PSG are through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

He said: ‘Well, I played Real Sociedad [in the last 16], we play Barcelona in quarter finals and if we go through, maybe Atletico in semis!

‘So yes, Spaniards will see me a bit more.’
