Lampard confirms Jorginho has replaced Barkley as Chelsea penalty taker

Jorginho converted the spot kick for Chelsea against Brighton

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard confirmed Jorginho has replaced Ross Barkley as Chelsea’s main penalty taker following Saturday’s victory over Brighton.

The England international missed a crucial spot kick against Valencia 10 days ago, wasting the chance to earn a point for his team on matchday one of the Champions League this season.

Both Willian and Jorginho felt they should have taken the penalty but Lampard clarified Barkley was right to take on the responsibility given he was, at the time, the designated player for the job.

After a goalless first half against Brighton, however, it was Jorginho who stepped up to take the penalty after a foul on Mason Mount three minutes after the re-start.

The Italy international, with Ross Barkley watching on, kept his cool and set Chelsea on their way to a first Premier League home victory under their new coach.

Asked whether Jorginho was now at the top of his penalty pecking order, Lampard said: ‘Yes he is, end of story. He is one of the leaders.

‘We needed the win. We haven’t had a 90 minute game where we’ve controlled it enough.

‘The only disappointment is we didn’t have more goals. A clean sheet as well. It is good for the confidence of everyone.

‘We had a lot of shots first half. But weak finishing and a bit of bad luck. You do start to wonder but you have to remain confident it will come and it did.’
