Lionel Messi rejects Neymar shirt number ahead of his move to PSG

Lionel Messi has agreed terms with PSG for a sensational transfer to the Ligue 1 side, and his jersey number has been revealed, according to reports.

According to French journalist Julien Maynard, the Argentine forward has chosen to wear the number 19 jersey, as opposed to his preferred number 10, which is currently being worn by his friend and former teammate Neymar.

It has been reported that the Brazilian star is ready to vacate it for Messi. But he reportedly turned down the offer in favor of his previous jersey number at club and international level.

Messi had his breakthrough at Barcelona in the 2004-05 campaign. And at the time, Ronaldinho wore the number 10 jersey, and the Argentine attacker made his debut in the jersey number 30 – which he wore for two years before switching to number 19 for another two years.

Ronaldinho’s exit in 2008 made the number 10 available, and the rest is history. He also wears the same jersey at international level.

Messi is arguably the greatest player in the history of football, and his outstanding abilities mean that any club he plays for has a huge chance of success.

With Barcelona having dropped the bombshell of the player’s exit on Thursday, attention turned to where his next destination will be. And due to the current financial situation only few clubs can afford him despite no transfer fee.

PSG are one of such club, and reports have emerged that they have agreed terms for a transfer. The French club have always sent a statement of intent with several marquee signings over the last decade, but Messi’s arrival trumps them all.

This summer has seen them recruit heavily, with players like Gianluigi Donnaruma and Sergio Ramos already arriving at the club. And If Messi joins, they will be expected to end their long wait for a maiden UEFA Champions League trophy.

But, the abundance of talent available to Mauricio Pochettino means that he has to deliver on the continent, and anything other than Champions League success will be deemed a failure.
