The Reds were missing attacker Hugo Ekitike, who was sent off during the League Cup third round win over Southampton on Tuesday.
His absence left Liverpool boss Arne Slot with little choice but to start record signing Alexander Isak at Selhurst Park, though the forward struggled to influence the match.
Isak’s attacking teammates—Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, and Dominik Szoboszlai—also failed to make an impact against Oliver Glasner’s men, who held the lead for most of the contest thanks to Ismaila Sarr’s ninth-minute goal.

Sarr’s strike marked his fifth in eight career outings against Liverpool, with the Senegalese winger also having two prior assists against the Merseyside club.
But Federico Chiesa pulled Liverpool level on 87 minutes.
And just when it seemed the match might end in a draw, Eddie Nketiah struck in stoppage time to seal a deserved 2-1 victory for the hosts.
Although Slot’s side lacked attacking sharpness, fans also criticised a defender for his underwhelming performance—even though he wasn’t on the pitch when the decisive goal was scored.
A number of fans expressed dissatisfaction with centre-back Ibrahima Konate’s display against the Eagles.
The 26-year-old featured for 74 minutes before being substituted for Jeremie Frimpong as Liverpool pushed for an equaliser.
Supporters voiced their opinions across social media.
One said: “Konate is the worst player with the ball in this team, I don’t care what anyone says, but he must go.”
Another added: “Ibrahima Konate either has a run of games where he’s faultless or forgets how to play football and becomes error-prone. There’s no middle ground, and it’s jarring.”
A third explained: “Rhys Williams, get your boots on, mate, this Konate is too busy flirting with Real Madrid and running his like he’s wearing Timberland boots. Poor performance from him again.”
While a fourth claimed: “This Mateta domination of Konaté. All over him in the air, in the wide channel and in hold-up play. He’s given Crystal Palace a big platform to play off.”
Then a fifth commented: “We’ve absolutely got away with murder there.
“We deserve nothing from this game. Konate and Bradley are genuinely the two worst on the pitch.”
Konate has recently been linked with a possible transfer to Real Madrid, with his current Liverpool deal set to run until June 2026.
Liverpool’s next challenge is a Champions League away fixture in Istanbul against Turkish champions Galatasaray on Tuesday. Crystal Palace will take on Dynamo Kyiv in their Conference League opener in Poland on Thursday.
